New York City is so short on morgue space for coronavirus victims that FEMA is hauling in trailers to store all the bodies.

“We are sending refrigeration trucks to New York to help with some of the problem on a temporary basis,” FEMA regional director Thomas Von Essen said at a Manhattan press briefing with Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday.

The city is expecting FEMA to send 85 trucks. Although their capacity was not immediately available, similar trailers already in use hold 40 bodies each. The additional FEMA trucks could double the city’s morgue capacity from 3,500 to 7,000.

Von Essen, who served as FDNY commissioner during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, said the military has also sent 42 people to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Manhattan to help process the 790 fatalities.

FITCHBURG - The Landry Arena on John Fitch Highway is being prepared for a temporary mortuary.

The conversion of the arena is part the state’s effort to ensure enough capacity for mortuary services as more people die in the COVID-19 pandemic.

A state police command vehicle and freight vehicles converged on Landry Arena on John Fitch Highway on Tuesday. Jake Wark, deputy director of communications for the state Executive Office of Public Safety, confirmed the plan for the arena.

According to a statement from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the plan is to stage temporary mortuary trucks at the arena in the event of increased deaths because of COVID-19 and/or decreased mortuary services.

The medical examiner’s office said it will adhere to strict protocols ensuring the safety of personnel and community before bodies are delivered for final disposition.

Event 201, a pandemic exercise to illustrate preparedness efforts

The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation hosted Event 201, a high-level pandemic exercise on October 18, 2019, in New York, NY. The exercise illustrated areas where public/private partnerships will be necessary during the response to a severe pandemic in order to diminish large-scale economic and societal consequences.

In recent years, the world has seen a growing number of epidemic events, amounting to approximately 200 events annually. These events are increasing, and they are disruptive to health, economies, and society. Managing these events already strains global capacity, even absent a pandemic threat. Experts agree that it is only a matter of time before one of these epidemics becomes global—a pandemic with potentially catastrophic consequences. A severe pandemic, which becomes “Event 201,” would require reliable cooperation among several industries, national governments, and key international institutions.

Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) benefited from stock trades worth millions of dollars shortly before the general public was alerted to the severity of the Covid-19 crisis, selling off shares in industries that have been adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic and buying shares of companies that have benefited, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) report published late Tuesday.

Loeffler, who sits on the Senate Health Committee, first began selling stocks on January 24 — the same day that committee held a private all-members session on Covid-19 — and continued making trades in late February and early March.

According to her latest financial disclosure, which the senator provided to the AJC, her largest transaction involved the sale of $18.7 million in Intercontinental Exchange stock in three separate deals dated February 26 and March 11. Intercontinental Exchange operates global exchanges for several financial and commodity markets — and since Loeffler made her first sale, its stock has fallen by 16 percent.

When challenged over the trades following prior reporting by the Daily Beast, Loeffler said the transactions were handled by third-party advisers, given that she is an elected official and her husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, is chair of the New York Stock Exchange and chair and CEO of its holding company, Intercontinental Exchange.

Additionally, a spokesperson for the senator told the AJC that the sell-offs were pre-planned in order to pay taxes, cover transaction costs, and produce “liquidity.”

Jeffrey Epstein used his connections to Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein to impress young women, and even helped one victim land a role in a horror movie produced by a Weinstein-owned company, The Daily Beast has learned.

Chauntae Davies was recruited into Epstein’s trafficking ring in 2001, when she was a 21-year-old massage-therapy student in California. She says the perverted financier groomed and sexually abused her for years before she escaped in 2005.

Davies’ time in Epstein’s world included a 2002 humanitarian trip to Africa with former President Bill Clinton on the money-manager’s private jet. Actors Chris Tucker and Kevin Spacey were along for the ride.

But Epstein also introduced Davies to Weinstein, who allegedly got her an audition for Feast, a 2005 film about a remote Texas tavern fending off monsters. Davies played a character identified only as “Drunk Girl,” according to IMDb.
