The Staff of The Fedora Chronicles is sad to report the passing of
World War II veteran and Father-In-Law of Staff Member Doug Palumbo: Ray
McCarthy.
"Some time during the early summer months of 1991, I met Ray
McCarthy. Ray had just turned 70 and looked much like you would
expect from a respectable man of his age and western upbringing;
slacks, shined cowboy boots, long-sleeved snap down shirt, western
style belt and buckle, and a bolo tie. His hair was white, albeit
sparse on top with just a little more on the sides and back. He
regularly wore a stiff straw rancher-style cowboy hat that finished
off the content, retired look quite nicely. Me, well that’s a
different story altogether...
For
some reason that is still unknown, Ray seemed to like me and never gave
me any guff about my appearance. Even if he thought I was a weirdo, he
always treated me well and we got along great (and still do!)
Perhaps he sees something in me I don’t fully see in myself. I would
like to think that maybe I remind him of an old buddy from back in his
Army days or maybe he sees a quality in me that harkens back to a time
when men took care of the business at hand yet were respectful and
courteous; a quality from his generation that is sorely lacking in
today’s world. That’s how I try to live my life and maybe he sees the
effort and care I put into myself and my family."
On May 19th, 2010, "My father-in-law passed away this morning. He
lived a good life filled with many adventures. This chapter of his life
is now closed and he has received what he has long sought; peace and
rest. So long dad, you will be missed...."
The
Demons Of Gilford Street. "I’m starting to come to grips with the
horrible memories that I’ve been trying to drown with the sangria, scotch
and tequila... While I’m standing in the kitchen this past Sunday afternoon,
I was suddenly burdened and overwhelmed with a true nightmare that’s
been lurking in the back of my mind that caused me to cringe and reach
for a bottle until the recent past.
"The Bad Dad Dilemma," turned 40 this past summer. I’m a father
of two boys, aged 7 and 5. These two fact have been weighing pretty
heavy on my heart recently. I’m simultaneously asking myself, what am
I doing with my life and what kind of father am I?

"Valdez Is Coming," authored by Elmore Leonard of "Get Shorty" and "Be
Cool" fame.
"BROOKLYN’S FINEST reminded me a lot of an old school cop movie from
the 70’s or 80’s. Amped up with a lot more violence, drug use and sex but
still, it’s a throwback to an era when directors, writers and actors weren’t
afraid to make their characters unlikable and unsympathetic. Many of the
characters in BROOKLYN’S FINEST do some pretty reprehensible things. Including
the three police officers the movie follows as they walk a moral tightrope
that threatens to break under them every day."
Ren's
Flicks To Hold You Over: “Capricorn One” - "This is hard to imagine.
After I saw this movie the first time when I was 11 or 12 years old, the
only thing I could remember about this conspiracy theory movie were the
confusing images about Mars, and James Browlin eating a freshly killed rattle
snake in cave somewhere out in the desert. When you're 40-something and
you've grown more cynical about the government and you can't swing a dead
webmaster on the internet with out hitting a site with a crazy conspiracy
theory, this motion picture packs a little more punch."

The Wind with Blacktorn:
Day Trip to the Taj Mahal: "As the sun began to lighten the sky we passed
by several camels pulling flatbed wagons on the shoulder of the road. I
made a comment to my partner about what an odd sight it was, and our driver
asked us if we wanted to stop and get some pictures. He obviously knew how
to earn a good tip, pulling the car over and backing up to the caravan."

sculpted out of cliffs in a deep, winding canyon in Jordan. My wife and
I visited this incredible city in 2006 on a combination tour of Israel
and Jordan. I asked our guide when it was built and he said, “It wasn’t
built. It was carved. Out of the cliffs. In the first century before
Christ.”
