Under the near obsessive guidance of ballet impresario Boris Lermontov young ballerina Victoria Page is poised for stardom. She falls in love with composer Julian Craster, who wrote her great success "The Red Shoes". Victoria marries him and leaves the troupe but finds herself torn between the demands of her art and her heart.

Incredible cinematically, this is the greatest ballet film ever made and gives a fascinating glimpse of the backstage life of a ballet troupe. The ballet at the centre of the film is a visual feast. The plot is almost secondary and it is a bit sentimental, Marius Goring is a weak link in the cast. Anton Walbrook and Moira Shearer are fine and the ending is genuinely shocking.
