Despite the huge success of Mickey Mouse Walt Disney started a new series of
animated shorts in 1929. He wanted a series using music instead of a
central character the result was the most innovative animated shorts in
film history, these films remain highly entertaining and paved the way
for the classic Disney animated features with their pioneering use of
colour, the multi-plane camera and hit parade tunes (Who's Afraid of
the Big Bad Wolf ? from The Three Little Pigs gave people hope in
the midst of the Depression).
There were 75 Silly
Symphonies made between 1929 and 1939. The first was The Skeleton
Dance, the first in colour was Flowers and Trees, the first to use the
multi plane camera which gave extra depth to animation was The Old
Mill.
Donald Duck made his debut in the Silly Symphony, The Wise Little Hen.
