This summer, Frank Calore was looking through his father's desk when he chanced upon a large envelope labeled WWII Pictures . Inside were many small, faded and age-curled photographs taken of and by his father during World War II, mainly while serving in Italy and surrounding areas in Europe.

Calore's comments lightheartedly: "That was the first time I'd seen these pictures, and the first thing that stuck me was the quality of the photographs. My father never showed such skill with the camera for our family albums..."

This collection of 149 vintage World War II pictures teems with youthful exuberance, comradeship and nostalgia for the Greatest Generation. There is a story in each photograph, from the vistas of Italian landscape taken with an awed eye, portraits of loved ones back home, inquisitive glimpses into Italian culture, poses with friends and fellow soldiers. These pictures are remarkable pieces of history, reminding us of World War II and its era from the perspective of the individuals who lived it.

Scanning of all the pictures was done by Alice Chuang. "Frank Calore is a teacher at the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. During the school day, he teaches United States History and Government I, American Studies, and the United States History and Government II. Calore is also the advisor to ABRHS Class of 2008 and has taught Driver's Education classes for many years. He also coaches the R.J. Grey Junior High School Spring Track Team and the ABRHS Varsity Cross-Country Team."
