A protest strike aboard the Battleship Potemkin when the crew are given rotten meat ends in a full scale revolution, the sailors raise the Red Flag and try to rally support in their home port of Odessa.

Not a movie that touches the heart though it remains a masterpiece of propaganda and creative editing. The Odessa Steps sequence in particular is a crucial part of film history taking montage as far as it could go, arguably Eisenstein took it too far in his next film October in which technique sometimes overrides a watchable narrative.

Trivia - The Golden Age of Hollywood

The Odessa Steps sequence was copied frame for frame in Brian de Palma's The Untouchables (1987) though the settings were obviously different.

Great as it undoubtedly is, its not a likeable movie, its amazing though - it keeps its freshness and excitement, even if you resist its cartoon message. Pauline Kael
