A couple of drifters are passing through a
Western town, news comes that a local farmer has been murdered and his
cattle stolen. A posse including the drifters is formed to catch the
culprits. Three men are found in possession of the cattle and the
townspeople want them hanged on the spot.
Possibly a bit slow to start but this
develops into the most powerful condemnation of the lynch mob mentality
ever put on film. Fonda gives one of his finest performances
particularly when he reads a letter at the end, a profoundly moving
moment in the history of American cinema.
This was Henry Fonda's last movie before he joined the Navy.
