A Metro Goldwyn Mayer Picture
When sly playboy Leon
d'Algout meets stern Comrade Irinia Ivanovna east-west romance results
and major complications intervene.
Garbo finally let her hair down for
this delightful comedy and it is her finest and most lasting film. Its
greatest asset apart from fine performances from Garbo and Melvyn
Douglas is its witty script, it sags a little in the last half hour
after comrade Ninotchka falls in love.
This was Garbo's penultimate film. She was to make one last comedy
again with Melvyn Douglas : Two Faced Woman (1941),it failed both
critically and with audiences and she retired from the screen.
The film was remade as the musical Silk Stockings (1957) with a Cole
Porter score and Cyd Charisse in the Garbo role.
