The tragic story of Lulu, a hedonistic dancer and prostitute who discards men at will.

In plot terms most of this film is fairly standard melodrama though the different settings including a shadowy London where Lulu encounters Jack the Ripper give it an epic quality. What makes it stand out is the vulnerability displayed by Louise Brooks in a captivating performance, her Lulu was something new in films a character who outwardly is a vamp but inside is trapped in her lifestyle which she will only escape with her death.
