A 12 year old boy works as a spy on the
Eastern front, because he is small he can cross the German lines
unnoticed.
An unusual war film seen from a child's
point of view. The director's mastery of surreal imagery is well
demonstrated and he also brilliantly uses newsreel techniques in the
devastating finale.
This was Tarkovsky's first
feature,he went on to become a regular in arthouse cinemas with films
like Andrei Rublev and Solaris.
With one blow it annuls a whole cinematheque of the war films of all
lands. Ivor Montagu, Sight and Sound
