Jerry Lundegaard is in a financial mess. In desperation he comes up with a plan to hire someone to kidnap his wife and demand the ransom from her wealthy father, to be secretly split between Jerry and the perpetrators. Jerry hires a couple of incompetents for the job and a cop and two innocent people are killed. Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief  is soon on the trail of the murderers.
