An honoured pastor of a
small Protestant church lives with his two daughters in an isolated
village in 19th century Denmark. Both daughters have opportunities to
leave the village but choose to dedicate their lives to their father
and
the church. Babette a refugee from Paris begs them to take her in as a
maid/housekeeper/cook. She wins the lottery and proposes to use the
money to prepare a gourmet feast to celebrate the 100th
anniversary of the birth of the sisters' father.
