John Trimble embezzles money from his
job, fakes his own death and a mutilated body is buried in his
place. He is later arrested for his own murder. His mother
recognises him and so does his former wife now married to the Governor
and expecting a child.
An almost completely forgotten
classic which is the best film DeMille ever made. This is one of the
first psychological dramas which gives an insight into the main
protagonist's conscience. This is done brilliantly with shadowy images
of faces telling him what to do(the whispering chorus of the title) an
incredibly cinematic device. The plot is also very clever based on a
simple idea.
DeMille thought this film represented the turning point in his career.
Though compelling it is quite depressing, it made a profit but he soon
turned to lighter and more superficial subjects.
