A
slave Spartacus leads a revolt against the might of the Roman empire.
The best and the most
literate of the ancient epics of the 50s and 60s. The acting is superb
from Douglas in the title role and Olivier to the character parts of
Ustinov and Laughton. The film does more than simply portray an era of
history and have exciting gladiatorial scenes but makes the audience
relate to the characters like no other ancient epic I've ever seen.

Anthony Mann was orginally set to
direct but fell out with Kirk Douglas.
As producer Douglas insisted on
blacklisted Dalton Trumbo (in the Communist witch hunts) to write the
screenplay.
