Dr Henry Frankenstein plays God and creates a monster from human remains but it has the brain of a criminal and causes havoc until seemingly killed in a fire.

Boris Karloff made eighty films before this one the role for which he is best remembered. Physically he was put through agony. The makeup and costume took make up designer Jack Pierce five hours to put on each day and two hours to remove. Karloff's body was elevated to a height of seven feet six inches by huge boots with thirty-pound weights in the soles creating the famous weird lurching walk. It was worth it for his powerful, poignant performance, the centrepiece of this excellent film.
