Tom Dunson and his adopted son Matthew Garth begin a massive cattle drive north from Texas to Missouri but on the way Matthew takes the herd away from Dunson when he tires of his bullying of the cattlemen. Tom though swears he'll catch up with Matthew someday and get his revenge.

I've always found the climax of this film a disappointment though here the build up is really what is important. It is Mutiny on the Bounty on the plains but this story has more psychological depth. Wayne and Clift both deliver excellent performances.

When the film was made Texas Longhorn cattle were nearly extinct and they had to be featured prominently so the illusion was created that all the herd were Longhorns when most were actually Hereford crosses.
