Professor Immanuel Rath a teacher at a town's high school finds it difficult to maintain order among his young pupils. He discovers they spend there evenings at a nightclub called The Blue Angel, he investigates but is aroused by the dancer Lola Lola. He gives up everything he has ever achieved to be with her but Lola is soon bored and he is humiliated constantly. The Professor leaves Lola and with his final strength goes back to his old school.

An emotional powerhouse of a movie which hasn't been equalled in its portrayal of the total humiliation of Professor Rath. It is a towering performance from Jannings who has tended to be forgotten because of Dietrich's stunning debut.
