A new kid in town Jim Stark is often in trouble, his middle class parents don't understand him. He finds some true love in his relationship with Judy and is admired by Plato.

The definitive movie about teenage angst still works after fifty years. Released just after James Dean's death it cemented his image in the public consciousness as the ultimate teen rebel.

The first sequence of the movie with the toy monkey was improvised by Dean on the set.

The film was originally going to be in black and white but it was decreed that all Cinemascope films had to be in colour.

Jim Stark was a tribute both to James Dean and an anagram of his character in East of Eden (1955) who was named Trask.

(there) is a wistful and truly poignant stretch where Mr Dean and Miss Wood as lonely exiles in their own homes try to pretend they are happy grown ups in an old mansion. There are some excruciating flashes of accuracy and truth in this film...  Bosley Crowther, New York Times, 27th October 1955
