In Rome in 1944 one of the leaders of the resistance Giorgio Manfredi is discovered by the Nazis. He turns to his friend Francesco asking Francesco's girlfriend Pina for help. Don Pietro Pellegrini, a priest is also involved with the Resistance.

A landmark in film history for its integration of human drama with documentary realism this film despite some melodramatic acting still works as a moving testimony to the resistance against the Nazis.

The film was one of the first important examples of a movement called Neo Realism which was a reaction to the frivolous nature of earlier Italian films. Neo realist directors like Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica reduced drama to its essentials to achieve truth. They were fond of using non-professional actors. An important figure in formulating the style was the writer Cesare Zavattini who contributed to many of the neo-realist films.
