One of the most entertaining films
to come out of Hollywood this musical was the first to be made
extensively on location for some unforgettable shots of post war New
York. It was also the beginning of a great decade for the MGM musical,
the opening is one of the most exhilirating sequences in cinema. The
score isn't its strongest point, some numbers from the Broadway show
were removed and the final ballet isn't Gene Kelly's finest hour but
the rest is sheer heaven. An unsung sequence I love is when Kelly
dances with Vera Ellen to When You Walk Down Main Street with Me.

Songs by Leonard Bernstein,Comden and
Green
include New York Is A Wonderful Town, Prehistoric Man, Come Up To My
Place, You're Awful, Main Street, On the Town, You Can Count on Me
