God and Satan war over earth; to settle things, they gamble on the soul of Faust. During a plague, Faust despairs and burns his books; Satan sends Mephisto to tempt Faust, first with insight into treating the plague and then with a day's return to youth. Faust eventually trades his soul for youth. Some time later, he's bored, and demands that Mephisto take him home. Faust promptly sees and falls in love with the beautiful Gretchen, whose liaison with him brings her dishonor. Is there redemption?

One of those rare movies that truly transport you to another world this is the peak of the German cinema of the 20s, a remarkable fantasy full of technical brilliance. A rarity in European silent films you also really feel for the characters, the universal nature of the Faust legend definitely helps.
