Two western train robbers keep one step
ahead of the law until they are tracked down to Bolivia.
Best of the buddy movies that
invaded cinema in the 60s and 70s. It has some great cinematic
showpieces: the explosion of the freight car, the jump into the water
and the final scene when Newman and Redford run to their deaths and the
image reverts to a sepia photograph. The song "Raindrops Keep Falling On
My Head" can be viewed as slightly cheesy now but it is catchy and
appropriate.

Dustin Hoffman was considered for the role
of Butch.
Jack Lemmon could have played Sundance but
for a scheduling clash with The Odd Couple.
Redford and Newman were such a potent star combination they were re-teamed with the same director for another entertaining film The Sting (1973).
