Dark sardonic comedy with a simple idea milked for all its comic potential. Lemmon is excellent, MacMurray is well used by Wilder as he was in Double Indemnity (1944) but MacLaine gives the greatest performance.
The idea of the apartment for hire for lovers was supposedly based on where Trevor Howard took Celia Johnson (unseen) in David Lean's Brief Encounter (1945).
