In Africa during World War I a rough riverboat captain and a prim missionary join forces to fight the Germans.

One of the most fondly remembered classics because it paired two of the great Hollywood stars Bogart and Hepburn and made us believe that under such trying circumstances they could fall in love. The performances of both are perfect and the film is only really let down by some dodgy sets and backdrops which you probably won't notice. Possibly the ending is rather sudden too though there is nothing wrong with leaving us asking for more.

Trivia - The Golden Age of Hollywood

Apparently Hepburn got her character when told to play it like Eleanor Roosevelt.

The film was made on location in Africa. Bogart and Huston were the only people in the party not to get ill because they refused to drink the local water preferring something a bit stronger.

"The movie is not great art but it is great fun, essentially one long,exciting,old-fashioned movie chase." Time
