RCA SelectraVision CED Manual

Presented by Erin "Systemcat" Weinstock Before VHS went into the main stream for watching videos. A number of other formats came to the scene to try to dominate the market for our use in this. Over the course of mainly the 70's and 80's these were produced.

Video formats are still competition today but not in such vast virilities as back then. This is a manual for a video player format called "Capacitance Electronic Disc," or "CED" for short.

The format was only produced from 1981 into 1986. The format known as Laserdisc was introduced one month before the CED format. But far out lasted CED due to flaws the CED format had. CEDs best described are vinyl records containing video. They could only be stored upright like they're Laserdisc cousins but could get damaged much more easily. The format could easily get scratched despite it's plastic cassie covering it and even a shack of six movies weighted a noticeable amount. RCA was the well known manufacturer of the format but other companies produced it also.

The first two images are purely ones only used for those disks. They appeared for most movies / collection -discs that came out before the player's release in 1981. The one stating "MCA VideoDiscs" I'm unsure was purely used on CEDS. It might have at a time also been used on Laserdisc since the label is also fitting to that format.

The screen shots showing the discs came from an ultra rare CED entitled "CED Stereo Video Discs". It wasn't mean to be sold in stores, it was meant to show off the player and what it could play on the note of stereo sound.

CED Magic: "This web site pertains to Capacitance Electronic Discs or CED's, a consumer video format on grooved vinyl discs that was marketed by RCA in the 1980's. This is the home site for the RCA SelectaVision VideoDisc FAQ and the CED Title Database. Additional information on the RCA VideoDisc System will appear here as it is prepared."
