"Six Blessings"
- Opinion by Kira Schiavone-
November 25th, 2005
Count your blessings, they say. Count your blessings. So, in the spirit
of Thanksgiving, the time when we are supposed to count our blessings,
I’ve listed six blessings here, many of them gained very recently. (And
I really am grateful for all of them.)
Blessing #1- A Linoleum Block Print: carve a design in reverse on a
linoleum block, run ink over it, and then flip it over onto a piece of
paper, and you’ll get something similar. This print is of a block made
by a good friend of mine last year. I just found it again today and it
will be going back to my dorm room at the end of Thanksgiving break to
be placed on my bulletin board as a reminder of home.
Blessing #2- A baby cousin: I shouldn’t have to explain this one. He is
approaching six months of age, and every minute I spend with him is
absolutely perfect. Even when I had to walk around for half an hour to
get him to calm down, I was still enjoying it. He’s the most adorable
baby…
Blessing #3- An unofficial mentor: on paper, he has nothing more to do
with me than be the adult on duty in my dorm one night a week. But he
has helped me find my own unique place in the school and get really
settled in, and he helped me extricate myself from a fairly sticky mess.
Blessing #4- Boarding school: It offers me a taste of independence,
with no one looking over my shoulder. I can keep my own hours, within
reason, and I don’t have to deal with people looking over my shoulder.
It’s like a never-ending sleepover. Most of us are very close, and most
Blessing #5- Romance novels: one of the girls in my dorm shares my
passion for romance novels, particularly Harlequin-style romance with a
happy ending. We’ve been exchanging books, and developing a great
friendship.
Blessing #6- Good intentions: the saying may be “the road to hell is
paved with good intentions,” but as long as someone’s intentions were
good, I really don’t see how you can blame them for any resulting
problems. And I’ve been fortunate enough to have the good intentions of
others in my life result in good long-term consequences, even when the
immediate ending was bad.
Well, I am thankful for all of the above. I
recommend that each of you make your own list. In fact, it can be a
nice thing to read aloud at a family gathering, if you each say what
you are thankful for. Or go around the table before you eat the turkey
and do it.
Before I close this, I have two blessings for you:
May you live in interesting times, and may you get exactly what you
deserve.
