Kira
Schiavone asks us to stop making such a big deal about Celeberty trials... It only encourages them!

"The Michael Jackson Trial"
- Opinion by Kira Schiavone-
June 24th, 2005
Yes, I realize that this subject is going to be discussed to death. I
realize that Ren has already mentioned it on the Fedora Chronicles. I
just can’t resist tossing out my own logic and opinions on this
subject. As far as I know, no one has yet looked at it from this point
of view.
There is a subtle difference between “innocent” and
“not guilty.” Michael Jackson may not fall into the second category,
but he never will be convicted as long as the jury remains within the
letter of the law according to what must be proven for a conviction.
This is because the only people who will allow their children to spend
the night there will be people after money, and with credibility
issues, the very same credibility issues that the prosecutor's
witnesses had this time. I cannot see how any parent except a
completely insane one would let their children stay over at this place.
The parents must have been after money. Because it will be immediately
obvious to the jury that these people are just after money, there will
always be credibility problems and Jackson will never be convicted.
That said, I also have a bone to pick with the
people who were spending millions of tax dollars on this, and
publicizing it so highly. The only reason everyone wants him is because
he is a celebrity. Certainly, he is a twisted, deranged man and should
be committed, but there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people like
that in the world. If something like molestation happens locally, it
will merit the front page in the local paper. The only reason that
happens is because our town is so small and peaceful that any major
crime committed here is shocking to us. Molestations committed here, so
near the city, never even get a passing mention in the city papers. I
also get the city papers delivered. The molestation cases mentioned in
there only take place within the city, never any mentions of cases in
the surrounding suburbs. Even the cases that take place within the city
are generally buried deep in the back of the paper. How different it
was with Michael Jackson’s case! And that was only because he is a
celebrity. The other cases are probably more serious because there are
no money-hunting parents involved, sending their child off. That can be
avoided by simply educating parents about the dangers that doing that
poses. The everyday ones are people snatching children off the street.
We, as a people, need to stop this. We failed with
the Martha Stewart trial. We failed with the Michael Jackson trial. I
challenge each and every one of you: The next time a trial involving a
famous person comes on, turn off the TV or change the channel. Don’t
bother buying the magazines that feature this trial. I’m not suggesting
that you cancel your newspaper because it talks about one of these
famous trials. But you don’t have to read these articles.
My other challenge is issued to the prosecutors of
the government and to the media. I challenge you to make every
molestation case as big a deal as the Michael Jackson case was.
I hope someone will take these challenges. Even
though expecting the media to do the second one is like expecting Ren
to give up ranting.
