The Von Trapp family is changed forever by the arrival of Maria who trains the children to sing and falls in love with their father. With the takeover of Austria by the Nazis the Von Trapps are forced to leave the country.

OK this film is overloaded with sugar, angelic children and singing nuns but for all that there is a serious side to it with the story set on the advent of the Second World War.The fact it is based on a true story gives it extra resonance and the scene where Julie Andrews as Maria returns to the children joining in with My Favourite Things never fails to make me cry. Seriously.
