    A wandering gunslinger becomes embroiled in a battle for land.

Beautifully photographed western with a heart as well as great moments of quick drawing gunfights. The standouts are Ladd and Jack Palance as a black-hearted gun for hire. There is no escaping from the harshness of the West here despite some beautiful shots.

 

This was Jean Arthur's last film. Stevens originally cast Montgomery Clift as Shane and William Holden as Joe Starrett.
