A talented Jewish
pianist escapes deportation to the Nazi labour camps and eludes capture
in the ruins of Warsaw.
A remarkable true story of the
survival of a Jewish pianist in the Warsaw ghetto, told in a
dispassionate newsreel way for the most part it lacks cloying
sentimentality but the final survival does get to me. Some vivid
imagery particularly a sequence where the bedraggled, bearded, starving
pianist stumbles around the rubble of Warsaw looking for food.

Adrien Brody lost 14 kilos for the
role and to get used to a feeling of isolation, he got rid of his
apartment, sold his car, only saw close friends and didn't watch
television.
