A mysterious phantom who lives in the catacombs of the Paris Opera threatens Carlotta a famous lyric singer by telling her to give up her role to an unknown Christine Daae. The phantom's obsession with Christine leads  him to abduct her. What is his secret and what does he want ?

Chaney dominates this film with a great performance, the unveiling scene still packs a punch. The other actors are merely OK and the plot gets far fetched in its later stages but this is still the most atmospheric and chilling version of Gaston Leroux's novel.

The film was made on Stage 28 at Universal which became known as the Phantom stage.

Chaney devised his own make-up which was based on a skull.

An 89 minute talkie version was released in 1929 with some new footage and dialogue recorded by the surviving actors.

The greatest inducement to nightmare which has yet been screened. : Variety
