Robert Conway, a leading politician is secretly brought to Shangri-la, a Utopia in which people lead carefree, long lives. He is earmarked to replace the high Lama who is in fact the Father who started the community. Conway's brother wants to return to civilisation. Robert, his brother and a girl born in Shangri-la leave, outside the Utopia the girl reverts to her real old age and the brother is killed. Robert loses then regains his memory. He struggles to return to Shangri-la and finally succeeds.

Much recut fantasy, it was altered because of World War II and the ending was changed. The sets are incredible and were very expensive leading to friction between Capra and Columbia which eventually led to the director leaving the studio. The completed movie is a great example of a studio classic with fine acting, some drama, fantasy and comedy from character actors like Thomas Mitchell and Edward Everett Horton. Unfortunately the film no longer exists in its complete form though the soundtrack survives and this is accompanied by still photos in the latest restoration.

Trivia - The Golden Age of Hollywood

Capra's first cut lasted for six hours and the cost was much more than all the rest of Columbia's output for the year.
