The establishing by Don Vito of the
Corleone family's criminal empire at the turn of the century is
contrasted with the exploits of his son Michael in the 1950s.
A remarkable film for its contrasting of two eras. On first viewing it
can be hard to follow but it just gets better every time I see it. The
acting is flawless throughout making the enthusiasm of Don Vito in
killing to get places and the callousness of Michael in murdering his
own all the more chilling and believable. Perhaps the ultimate warning
that you can take retribution too far : the broken, hapless image of Al
Pacino at the end sums up the cost.
Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro are the
only two actors to win separate Oscars for playing the same character. Brando was meant to come back for
the
flashback scene at the end of the family in happier times but declined
to turn up even for a day's shooting.
