Several bourgeois friends planning to get together for dinner experience a succession of highly unusual events that interfere with their expected dining enjoyment, as the film progresses the interruptions become more and more surreal.
One of the most joyous films of
Luis Bunuel this laughs at the pomposity of the upper classes and their
hypocrisy. The old Spaniard as usual subverts traditional cinematic
narrative. He plays with the audience's expectations, it is almost like
watching Monty Python's Flying Circus with a French accent : expect the
unexpected.

A perfect synthesis of surreal wit and blistering social
assault. Jan Dawson
