James Allen is
sentenced to a chain gang, he escapes and becomes a respected member of
society but when his past is uncovered the authorities insist he serves
his sentence. It is a trap to get him back in the chain gang with
little hope of an imminent pardon.
Few films have affected the way
laws are dispensed but this hard-hitting expose of chain gangs based on
a true story made law makers look again at the cruelty of such places.
Paul Muni gave his greatest ever performance as the hero betrayed by
the system who ends up with no way out but a life of crime. It is grim
but spell-binding stuff which still packs a punch.

The model for the film was Robert E Burns
who was still a fugitive from justice when he collaborated on the
screenplay.
