A man and his son search for his stolen bicycle which is vital to his employment and a reasonably comfortable life.

The best of the Italian Neo-realist films. It is very truthful in depicting the poverty of post war Italy and is the most overtly realistic of these films. It is very respectful of the plight of the poor generally which I also like, it has relevance beyond its time period. Possibly I wasn't deep into it emotionally but I certainly sympathised with the plight of the man dependent on the bicycle for his livelihood. Also the hypocrisy of the way different "thieves" are treated is neatly highlighted.

Trivia - The Golden Age of Hollywood

De Sica almost made the film for David O'Selznick who offered backing if Cary Grant was cast in tha main role.

My idea is to de-romanticize the cinema. Vittorio de Sica
