Severine loves her husband but can't be intimate with him. She indulges in sexual fantasies eventually becoming a prostitute by day.

The greatest surrealist movie ever made this is extremely erotic but curiously never goes over the edge into pornography, everything is suggested, it is often not even clear if we are watching reality or the heroine's dream world. Shocking and not to everyone's taste this is nevertheless a superb film. Only this director could make such a fine work about so sordid a subject nobody else would even begin to try.
