Lavish sets, Erich Wolfgang Korngold's rich score, and Michael Curtiz's robust, quick-cutting direction make this film the greatest swashbuckler ever made. The cost was enormous for 1938, more than $2 million but in the end it was worth it because this is a timeless classic with Errol Flynn the definitive Robin.

The film was begun by director William Keighley but when Jack Warner viewed Keighley's rushes, he decided that more vigor was needed and brought in his top action director, Curtiz.
