Julian Marsh,a successful Broadway musical producer embarks upon a new show despite ill health. The star of the show is Dorothy Brock but on the night of the premiere she breaks her ankle and is replaced by one of the chorus girls Peggy Sawyer. Marsh tells Peggy at the stage wings "you're going out there a nobody but you've got to come back a star!"

The definitive backstage musical with a Warner Brothers streetwise style not seen before or since. The Busby Berkeley production numbers are great giving Ruby Keeler the opportunity to make the most of her talents, Bebe Daniels overacts occasionally but nothing can derail this entertaining show.
