I don't really like the volcano bottle as you are limited to heating water. If it were part of a larger kit I may give it a go but for keeping things simple I'd rather use my Sweedish kit as Dan showed above or some other Billy pot. You can heat/purify water, cook food, use it as a shovel/scoop, etc.

I have to agree with you Doug. I have used both the Volcano bottle stove and the Kelly Kettle. Both of these are very good for boiling water with minimal fuel and in one case providing concentrated heat for cooking but you still need a second pot of some sort. If you have a supply of dried rations that can be reconstituted in their own packaging either will work but for more complicated or tasty food you need the old pot and pan.

I experimented with both the bottle stove and the Kelly and found the Kelly to be a bit more durable. Using tinder I was able to burn a hole in the heat base of the Volcano bottle, the unit lasted about ten more uses after that. I still keep the Kettle in case of power outages.
