Crimson Skies to return?

Postby Igor de LStok » Wed Apr 18, 2012 4:54 am

The big news in DieselPunk this month has been comments from Jordan Weisman that he would like to revisit the "Fractured States of America". In an interview with Shack News, Jordan, who also created Shadowrun and MechWarrier...

revealed he wishes to resurrect Crimson Skies and its dieselpunk world of air-pirates.

"I'm hopeful that's another property that I can approach soon. I'm in discussions with them about that," he told us. "I'm hoping that we can bring that back to life as well."

Weisman's former company Smith & Tinker licensed the video game rights to Crimson Skies in 2007, along with Shadowrun and MechWarrior. However, "It kind of fell into the same void" as the first stab at resurrecting MechWarrior, unable to secure a publisher.

"That era and that story is one of my favorites that we came up with and I'd love to be able to go back and tell stories in that world as well," he said.

Crimson Skies was first released as a board game by FASA in 1998, followed by books, a miniatures game, and two video games. It's set in an alternate-reality 1930s, where air-pirates plunder the skies over a fractured United States.

Jordan seems on a roll with double his original Kickstarter goal for Shadowrun Returns funded. Crimson Skies is a fictional universe, an altered timeline that has been used for a variety of successful games and books including well-received Microsoft PC and X-Box games. From the official Microsoft website …

In this alternate history, the year is 1937 and the United States is fractured into squabbling nation-states, brought about by the weight of the Great Depression, regional prohibition and mounting isolationism. Giant Zeppelins crisscross the skies carrying both passengers and cargo, and airborne bandits are a constant threat.

It has pirates and gangsters, gumshoes and movie stars. Its a world where The Maltese Falcon meets Flyboys, The Rocketeer and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. The plots and characters hearken back to the seminal works of pulp magazines, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard, exciting, fast-paced tales where classic archtypes are given individuality by the absolutely immense range of regions created by the 'break up' of the United States, each with a unique cultural background creating a virtually limitless canvas for conflict, triumph and tragedy.

Have a look at this Yahoo Playlist of the promotional videos created for the MS PC game.

Dammit, I've spent most of the night browsing over CS sites when I should be writing! Surprisingly, I've found a new thread that has some great new video content -Let's Play Crimson Skies which is the work of a guy by the name of "Research Indicates". After watching a couple of his videos (especially THIS one about the USS Macon, the inspiration for the zeppelins in CS) I would hazard a guess that Mr Indicates is a video professional, a freelancer or a very talented amateur!

I love Crimson Skies! The setting just grabbed my attention back in 1998 when the board game came out and it hasn't let it go. I have two miniatures from the game sitting on my nightstand; a Brigand and a Peacemaker. I even made a Crimson Skies setting for GURPS and gamed it a couple times. Crimson Skies and Shadowrun inspired many changes I made to my RPG setting. When Jordan started Smith & Tinker I hoped he would revive it, so hopefully he'll be able to this time around!
"When the mob and the press and the whole WORLD tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the River of Truth and tell the whole WORLD:

'No, YOU move.'" - Captain America

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.
