In my day...

Came across this while reading the Daily Mail!

In my day, all we got for Easter was carrot on a stickWar rationing was a way of life during World War Two, creating a national culture of austerity, but it also sparked ingenuity, such as swapping an ice-cream for a carrot on a stick.
It was the official wartime substitute for ice-cream, and some British children born just before the war didn’t discover what ice-cream actually was until the fighting had finished and rationing stopped.
The carrot on a stick was offered as the alternative when supplies ran low, because sugar needed to make ice-cream was one of the first luxuries to be hit on rationing, along with bacon and butter.

Times do change, don't they?

"Be always drunken. Nothing else matters: that is the only question. If you would not feel the horrible burden of Time weighing on your shoulders and crushing you to the earth, be drunken continually. Drunken with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtues, as you will. But be drunk.. ask what hour it is.. 'It is the hour to be drunken! Be drunken, if you would not be martyred slaves of Time; be drunken continually! With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you will.' "

Well, at least they were getting their vitamin A. Sometimes I think we have had it so good for so long in this country that we are forgetting to be a little grateful.

Yes, well in wars of today, the military goes to war and the rest of society goes to the mall.
Indeed, times have changed.

Part of me almost wishes our "recession" was more like the depression so people could learn gratitude and resourcefulness.

Henri I couldn't agree more, but I don't think it is a function of depression v/s recession. I think it has more to do with the death of individual imitative and the birth of the entitlement generations.

The economics behind war have changed. A good discussion would be if that is a cause, or an effect...
We have top men working on it....right now.
