Pen and Paper RPGers

Postby Cousi » Wed Jun 01, 2011 3:00 am

Any folks out there who are gamers? I'm not talking the fancy computer games, I'm talking old-school pen and paper RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons.

I'm a gamer from way back (almost 30 years now). I started with red box D&D, then moved into AD&D then 2nd edition. I never played 3rd edition, having then found other systems like Star Frontiers, Top Secret (all from TSR) then Palladium and eventually GURPS (from Steve Jackson). I've pretty much stayed with GURPS for the past 20+ years.

So do you game? What genre do you prefer? Any memorable storylines/characters?

I know we started a RPG here on the forum. It was quite fun but hard to maintain. So far as pen and paper RPGs, I lightly dabbled, playing only a small handful of times. No notable characters or storylines that I can recall.

I played back in the 1970's and 80's. Lots of DM's, and fellow characters. The best games were hard to remember as they were too complex, and the worst, well you wouldn't want to remember them anyway. I did D&D, AD&D, and found that while the framework IS important, it isn't as important as the players working together and ROLE-playing the game.

I too was into D&D back in the 80s and the mention of Star Frontiers brings back many fond memories. The one I really got into was Call of Cthulhu. Friends and I would play that every weekend for years. I was renting an old run-down Victorian house at the time and we would play in the attic in the cooler months. As far as atmosphere goes, it doesn't get any better for that game.

CofC was a LOT of fun IF you had a bunch of good gamers and a good ref.. The first game I played we ended up getting pulled in by the cops after throwing sticks of dynamite out of a speeding car at some cultists.. The things you learn from ;-)

Oh yeah. I remember Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells being a favorite.

We did have a good group for the most part. And regular attendees as well...which I think really made a difference with those types of games.

Speaking as a GM/Referee, regular attendees are a huge plus. Although atmosphere certainly helps.

I've been a gamer for decades. My group is getting ready to start a CoC campaign now, we created characters yesterday.

The setting is the 1920's and I'm running a Federal Agent. We have a couple of Treasure Hunters and a Librarian. The party could have better balance, but the GM is adept at balancing the campaign to the characteristics of the party. There will be one more player joining the group, she was not able to attend yesterday due to scheduling conflicts.

If there is any interest, I can post updates here.

Starting playing D&D in the late 70's when all we had was the orignal boxed "Basic" set and the "Monster Manual" - the rest was not yet published!

Introduced my kids at an early age. Also played "Tops Secret" and "Time Lord'

I'm now working on getting my son, his buddies and a friend of mine into a FATE game of "pulp era sci-fi" - rocketships and atomic rayguns and such.

I am also a lifelong gamer. I have played through most editions of Dungeons & Dragons. I currently run games in D&D 3.5 and play in Shadowrun and a 4th Ed game. I have played in Cyberpunk 2020, Star Wars (d6 and d20), D20 Modern, Jovian Chronicles and a few others. I am a longtime dork!

I'd be interested! Start a new thread in the Games part of the board and I'll be reading it. 8)

Yeah, I think that the last pen & paper RPH that i had played was Shadowrun in the early 90's. Thought it was interesting that the movie Johnny Mnemonic has a lot of the tech elements that Shadowrun has. Like Johnny's ability as a Decker or Hacker. Great concept for a game. Thought it would make a great video game along the lines of the Final Fantasy franchise. I think Xbox came out with a version but I never heard that much about it.

Cheers!
