Favorite sandwich recipes. I LOVE sandwiches. In fact, if I could go back in time and take credit for an idea, it would be the sandwich!

Sal-wich (A Kid and Adult-Pleasing Sloppy Joe)

My niece and nephew like my Manwich variant. My girl really likes it.

3/4 pound lean ground beef
1/4 pound pork italian sausage
1 can of Manwich
1/4 cup of diced carrot
1/2 cup of diced mushrooms
1/4 cup diced onion
1/4 to 1/2 cup diced red or yellow or orange pepper

Real simple. Dice all the vegetables and toss in a skillet. Keeping the veggies in the skillet, add and brown the meat. Drain the fat. Add the sauce. I like to use onion buns for the sandwiches. The veggies add some texture and complexity. Not very fancy but great for the kids.

That sounds great! I've always loved the idea of the Sloppy Joe and its variations.

So you got some leftover meatloaf.....

If you are like me you will warm it up with the left over potatoes , veggies etc etc..

But I always like to save a few slices for sandwiches.....

Here is what I like to do.... Put your slices in a frying pan and brown both sides nicely in a bit of butter....

In a bowl mix:
1 T Mayo
1 T Dijon mustard
1 T Ketchup
1 T + 1tsp Heinz 57 sauce (hey this is Pittsbugh you have to put Heniz in the sauce)
1 T A-1 Steak sauce
Salt & Pepper to taste

Mix well and spread on sandwich... This sauce is excellent for French Fries also...

For this I like a nice artisan bread with a hard crust.

If you want you can spread a little butter and olive oil (mixed 50/50) on one side of the bread and either:

grill it for grill marks

Put it in the frying pan and slightly toast it like a grilled cheese

Or if you have a panini machine use it to toast the sandwich

Or just make a sandwich with the bread.

Let me know if you try this and how you like it....

PS Great Idea for a thread Ortega..... 8)

These folks were at the Bite of Oregon last week and it was fantastic what they were offering.

It is a way different take on the old PB&J sandwich. They're almost decadent, or maybe just a guilty pleasure.

Cheers!

Seriously, I been eating the sun up for years... only without the honey and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon on top......

My ex loved to eat Peanut butter and sliced dill pickle sandwiches......

A favorite of mine in the early mornings is simple, tasty, and inherited from my grandfather. No real recipe except for slice up some red and green peppers and toss 'em in a frying pan with some olive oil and let 'em simmer. Once they're plenty fried up, take some semolina bread and cut it for a sandwich and toss the peppers on, but keep the oven on. Next, slice some mozzarella cheese and pop it on top (also add any meat you would like at this point. I recommend sopressata.) and toss the whole thing in the pan to let it all fry up, toasting the bread and melting the cheese. Once the cheese is melted, take it off and let it cool a bit and dig in.

I think I have some of the filling left from the other night but no fancy buns. I'll check in the AM.

The sandwich my Pop used to make for either lunch or sometime breakfast was a peppers and eggs sandwich. One of my favorites.

He'd do up some bell peppers and a little onion in a pan and then add scrambled eggs. Put it on toast with a thin smear of mayo. It was the best. I think it must be an east coast thing because most folks on the left coast have never heard of such a thing and the only other person I've heard talk about it was Sinatra on one of the Rat Pack CD's.

Cheers!

My grandmother used to bake her own bread and one of things she would do was to slice two thick slices of fresh bread. Her bread had the hard crunchy crust....

And slice up potatoes and fry them in the bacon fat she kept, then put the potatoes on the thick slices of bread covered in butter. Cover the potatoes with fresh ground pepper...

I still make these sometimes in the winters especially when all the ground is covered in snow and the wind is blowing I will sit in my kitchen and eat these while watching through the sliding glass doors to see the wind and snow blow around ...

Sounds like classic PA comfort food. Grandma Thomas made something similar. I thought it was an old recipe from Russia but it turned out it was something she learned about during WWI for "Meatless Mondays."

My wife had picked up a jar of Chow Chow from a catalog food company. I've been told this is an older southern sort of thing. So far, I've found it quite good, though different on burgers and roast beef.
Any other ideas? Has anyone else run into this stuff before? If you liked it, what did you use it on?
