Tufa tour

Postby Blackthorn » Fri Jul 15, 2011 11:01 pm

While Mrs B and I staying near Bodie and Yosemite, we were right by Mono Lake, a big water supply for the city of Los Angeles (although there are hundreds of miles in between). As LA has pulled the water over the decades, the lake elevation has dropped dramatically. As the level went down, tufa towers appeared. Tufa is/are caused by calcium-rich springs that flow up through the lake bottom and bond to the carbonates in the water, creating these formerly underground towers. They make for a fantasy-like appearance.

Fantastic geology! It reminds me of the set used to film that old science fiction film Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Thanks for sharing.

Really neat...

The things I learn from this website. I never knew anything like that happened or even thought about it....

As always Great pics.. Thanks....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

So let me get this straight, if I fill up my back yard with water and then drain it, a pretty lady of the lake will appear with really neat lava rock looking towers ?????

I am off to Lowes to buy a lot of garden hose

On the way to Lowes you may want to swing by the drugstore and pick up a large box of band aids. If MRS SOG sees you post you're gonna' need them.
