The X-Files

My wife and I have been watching this series via Netflix and I was wondering if The X-Files could either make it on it's own as it was or if they could pick this series up where it left off after the final episode.

And what is it about this show that's still relevant after all these years and is still able to get under our skin?

Never really watched the show much. Saw the first movie. Thought it was ok. I have always meant to go back and watch the series.

I can't say enough good things about this show and recommend watching it from the very beginning.

My wife Patricia is the big X-FILES fan and I watched it with her but I never much cared for it. Matter of fact, back when it was on Fox, Patricia would watch X-FILES and "Sliders", another show I didn't like at all.

I just could never get into the show or the characters. Fox Mulder should have been ashamed to pick up a check as he's the worst investigator ever. I did enjoy some of the stand-alone episodes such as the one where the alien disguised himself as a black ballplayer during the 1950's. Or the one with the mutant cannibals who kept the living torso of their mother under the bed. That episode was so outrageously bizarre and horrific that Fox only aired it that one time. It's also got one of the most disturbing and brutal murders I've ever seen in a TV show while Johnny Mathis singing "Wonderful, Wonderful" is playing.

The alien mythology that ran through the entire show never clicked with me as it felt as if the writers were making it up as they went along.

I've got a review of the second X-FILES movie on my hard drive somewhere...I'll dig around for it and let you guys get a look.

I thought the series was GREAT, .. with some exceptions ..good and bad.. My favorite eps were the "mutant cannibal" one you mentioned along with, "Jose Chung from Outer space"! I really didn't care for the show in its last season but I liked Mulder and didn't really give the last season a chance. I liked the first movie but .. really did NOT like the second one.

Forgot about "Jose Chung's From Outer Space"...yeah, that was a good one. Jose Chung would have made for a great re-occurring supporting character. Too bad they killed him off in 'Millennium'

I also forgot about that terrific episode that gave us the origin of The Lone Gunman, guest-starring Richard Belzer as Detective John Munch!

The "Cannibal Mutant" episode is the only one that legitimately gave me the creeps. The Johnny Mathis music provided such an eerie counterpoint to the suspense that I've never been able to hear it the same way again. By the way that if I was that sheriff I would have had the worlds largest shotgun and guard dog collections ever seen.

I agree with the alien conspiracy theme. It never seemed to develop any urgency to me.

I have to say that despite their different jobs and shows the character Carl Kolchak was a much better investigator than poor Fox Mulder. Having said all of that there was something about the show that appealed to me. I guess that like a lot of people I enjoy exploring really strange mysteries and the "X-Files" provided that.

I only watched a few episodes of the series but I thought it was pretty good. What I never understood was the fact that all aliens are out to get us. I mean, what would the aliens hope to achieve? If the myths/legends or whatever you want to call them are true, then we are a hopeless helpless planet who is so far behind in technology we might as well be in the Stone Age. Why would aliens want anything to do with us? We wouldn't be able to protect them, provide them with anything. Only desperate alien species would want to conquer us. I just think people were being paranoid.

I'm not really sure how much danger the Earth is in from an actual invasion from space but for the sake of argument lets say that hypothetically one could happen. Historically speaking conquerors, with a few notable exceptions, have placed precious little value on the culture and technology of the conquered. In most cases the conquerors valued raw materials, slaves, and the land itself.
I think that if a hypothetical invasion did take place it would be possible that the same motivation would apply. The fact that we are "backward" from a technological standpoint would only serve top make the invasion more feasible to hostile strategic planners.

But like I said, this is strictly hypothetical.

I don't know how I missed this thread. I'm a HUGE X-Files fan and have watched the entire series several times. It had so many wonderful twists and turns and kept me guessing right up until the end. I really hope they make a third movie and tie up the alien invasion storyline. It would be epic to see on the big screen and I know fans have been waiting for that for quite some time.
