Are work suits on the way out?

Everything to go with the lid when going to the office, a night on the town and special occasions. Looking sharp in your vintage/retro clothing has never been so easy... This is also your table to discuss and contribute to the conversations about reproducing the "Great Detective" look. Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca" and "The Maltese Falcon" and William Powell in "The Thin Man" are just two great examples!

Sorry, but I thought the older topic was so good that I had to merge it with this new one.

Think suits are out? Think again.

Three times I have gone to events wearing the charcoal gray suit that my wife bought for me a couple of years back and each time people have gravitated towards me as if I was in charge. Sometimes its an uncomfortable feeling because I'm simply not; I'm just the guy who showed up wearing a suit because I thought that's what the occasion called for.

One time in particular I go to BJ's Wholesale after attending an event and I'm just walking through the wine isle. Someone who was older than me by 10 or 15 years called me "Sir" and asked if I would help him pick out some wine for an event he was hosting. Why? Because I was wearing a suit, a black wool over-coat and a fedora?

It's a sad commentary on modern society, people treat you better if you dress better. When I was working at some high-level high tech firms people skipped the boss and asked me tough questions. Why? I showed up every day wearing a business dress shirt and a tie. The days I wear just a t-shirt and slacks, I was ignored or treated like one of the guys.

People treat you differently based on the way you dress for work or other occasions. On another forum, some Clint character tried to argue with me because that's wrong and I should not be encouraging you folks to dress a few steps above your station in life. Not that my facts are incorrect but it's wrong to dress better than the post you hold and that people will treat you better than you deserve, but mostly it's just wrong to treat people differently because of attire.

OK - Granted. It's wrong that people treat better because they dress better. Just like it's wrong to want to marry a woman whom you find attractive or buy a car based on looks and performance. It's not fair, it's not right, but it's the way it is and why not use it to your own advantage. How you present yourself tells others what you want them to know about you.

Dress for the job you want 5 years from now, not the one you're applying for now.

Good call, Eric.

As for the idea that a person should not be judged by their appearance, I tell people get over it.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

I'm begining to notice I'm less likely to get carded at bars and liquor stores when I'm dressed well.

"Be always drunken. Nothing else matters: that is the only question. If you would not feel the horrible burden of Time weighing on your shoulders and crushing you to the earth, be drunken continually. Drunken with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtues, as you will. But be drunk.. ask what hour it is.. 'It is the hour to be drunken! Be drunken, if you would not be martyred slaves of Time; be drunken continually! With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you will.' "

I'm pretty sure that all people working in a company need to wear their company dress code right?
