Here is some modern fashion with an early 20th century flair.

Who knew that my Orthodox Jewish ancestors in the Holy Land were such fashionistas!

Image
This is my grandfather Mordechai(Max) at age 19 circa 1920 standing in front of a Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

Image
Max again circa 1927 with my uncle. Graduated to a Fedora. Drives me crazy that when he passed away in 1986 he had a large wardrobe of Fedoras...but the last thing I ever envisioned myself wearing at age 27 was my grandfathers hat! They say "the problem with youth is that it's wasted on the young"!

Two distant cousins on the Sea of Galilee(Kineret) around early 1930's

Image
My grand parents in front of the "Tomb of the Patriarchs" in Hebron around mid 1920's , where my grandmother was born and raised, just before they emigrated to the USA to flee rising Arab "Pograms" against the Jews that were tolerated by the British during their "Mandate". Several years later in 1929 the Arabs stormed Hebrons Jewish neighborhood of over 800 and massacred 67, the remaining jews fled and Hebron became "JudenFrei" till after the 1967 war when once again the Israelis attempted to resurrect the community. They were eventually "evicted" by the Olmert government as part of the peace process which led to the ransacking and destruction of the Tomb of the Patriachs" by the Muslims the day the Jews were removed.

My great grandfather(Max's father), Moshe David Cohen, officiating at a wedding in Jerusalem in the 1940's. If you are a Cohen you are descendent from the priest class and are frequently asked to officiate at weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and Bris. My mother tells me she's pretty sure his hat is a Borsalino.

Great pics, Wineguy! And sobering stories. I was going to tell of a story I read about similar things but realized I'd be hijacking the thread and taking it in a different direction. But thanks for sharing both these great pictures and the stories.

Still would like to hear your story blackthorn...I'd post it and let the Mods decide if it needs it's own thread.

Very interesting and great pics. It is nice to be able to actually see your ancestors and be able to mark the time and history with the pics...

Thanks for sharing....

That's a good idea, Wineguy. It's not a story of what happened to me, but of what I read about happening during the battle for Jerusalem during June of 1967. There was a hospital on a hill....I think there's a university there now (I'm blanking on the name of the hill and university but I'm sure you know the place). Anyway, during the heavy fighting there was a bus full of doctors and nurses going up the hill to the hospital. They had an escort of Jewish fighters, but were ambushed by a much larger force. The battle went on for hours, as I recall the story, but finally the defenders were overwhelmed, and that whole busload of unarmed doctors and nurses were massacred without mercy. That made my blood boil as I read it. And then on my first trip to J'lem, we went up that hill because there's a scenic view from there, with plaques describing what you're seeing down below. As we drove up in our bus I was looking around thinking, "Hey...this place fits the description in the book I read..." So I asked the guide and he said "yes, indeed, the road we drove up is right where that happened." I got angry all over again. I'm still angry, even though I'm not Jewish.

Wineguy, Thanks for sharing the pictures of your Grandparents. I haven't seen many family type images from that era in that location.

My pleasure to you all! I've got some more great vintage family pics with hats on some archived DVD's, I'll dig for a few more.

Blackthorn, I believe there were about 80 victims on their way to Hadassah Hospital on Mt Scopus where the attack took place. 20 of them woman nurses. It took place in 1948, not the Six Day War.

Ah, you're right, Wineguy, thanks for that reminder. Yes, Mt Scopus was the place I was talking about. I read two books within a month of each other, about 5 years ago, so I got the time period mixed up. One book was on overall Israeli military history and the other was centered on the Six Day War.

My grandfather always wore a hat, and my grandmother always said that the worst driver is in world is "An old man in a hat" I admit to becoming the old man in a hat, but will not accept the tag of worst driver yet.

Blackthorn I think this is in the wrong thread. Don't stills from zombie films belong over in Motion Pictures? :)

Reading Wineguy's posts, I want to also add a couple of images of My Grandparents.

This is My Grandfather and Grandmother (Opa and Oma), Taken outside of their apartment building where they lived in Berlin, right next door to Charity Hospital where he practiced. This had to be around the mid to later 1920's

Image

Now, here is my Grandfather at the 1939 World's fair. FWIW, this photo was small, probably taken with either a small Kodak or a Zeiss Baby Box camera.

Image

I have no idea where he bought the Hat in Germany, let alone what kind of Hat he is wearing in the NY, let alone where he bought it. What I do know is that during the Jewish High Holidays (Berlin), every Male wore a Top Hat in the Synagogue. That Top Hat is long gone, but when I did have it, it was pretty much damaged to the point that at that time, no one seemed to know how the heck to fix it, let alone restore it.
