J. Peterman clothing

Everything to go with the lid when going to the office, a night on the town and special occasions. Looking sharp in your vintage/retro clothing has never been so easy... This is also your table to discuss and contribute to the conversations about reproducing the "Great Detective" look. Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca" and "The Maltese Falcon" and William Powell in "The Thin Man" are just two great examples!

J. Peterman clothing

Postby DanielJones » Sat Oct 02, 2010 3:25 pm

Every so often I get something from J. Peterman. A couple of years back I got one of their Harris Tweed Blazers and last year I got their Kipling blazer. For the most part they are fairly well made and pretty straight forward. Of course like anything off the rack they do need to be fitted to you. It is a rare thing to get an item that fits perfectly. No big deal really.
So who else has bought from J. Peterman and what are your thoughts on their offerings.
I just ordered their Cavalry Twill Jacket yesterday. it is a style that I've been looking for, the only thing that had held me back for so long was the price. Fortunately not too many folks were interested in it so my size was actually in the clearance department.
Image

It was on clearance for $98 and they took an additional 16% off of that. Made it quite affordable. I will post the pics when I get it. Plus I managed to get my wife their short sleeve 1947 dress in orange for $58. She's been wanting one for some time now. Besides she looks fantastic in orange.

Anyway, I'll let you know what I think about the Cavalry Twill Coat when I get it next week. Please feel free to share what you have gotten from them.

Cheers!

I have always liked their stuff. If I had spare scratch, I'd love to get something.

Hot dog! So much I want... However, I think I may have to control myself and simply start with their 1903 shaving cream.

"Be always drunken. Nothing else matters: that is the only question. If you would not feel the horrible burden of Time weighing on your shoulders and crushing you to the earth, be drunken continually. Drunken with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtues, as you will. But be drunk.. ask what hour it is.. 'It is the hour to be drunken! Be drunken, if you would not be martyred slaves of Time; be drunken continually! With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you will.' "

I am on my second panama hat, the first was better, but I managed to destroy it over 15 years or so. The newest one is a bit stiff, but time will tell. I have also had numerous shirts and there old boot cut jeans (they stopped carrying them, too bad), and have been eyeing a duster or durango jacket , just not sure it is me.

Well, the jacket finally arrived! No thanks to UPS. The jacket is in fine condition, no damages, but the box & hanger that it came with looked like they played tackle football with them and then drop kicked it into the back of the truck.
The jacket is a near perfect fit for me. The sleeves need about 1" taken off (good thing I have orangutan arms), & I might have it tapered about 2" at the bottom. Other than that, it's a keeper. The fabric is a light weight cavalry twill. I would akin it to maybe the Wested Indy trousers, but in grey of course. This is a good everyday jacket for a day out or an evening out. There is enough space to put a sweater under it for a warming layer, but I would call this one a Spring, Fall, maybe Summer jacket. A cool day or evening jacket. If anything you could always add a topcoat for a cold day as a layer.
Again, for me it's a keeper. The arm holes are high enough for me that the jacket doesn't fly about. The alterations I mentioned can happen at a later date as they are not critical. For me, this is a nice off the rack jacket worth the reduced price I paid, I wouldn't have gone for this at it's original price.

I will post pics maybe tomorrow, a little busy this afternoon for pics, but I wanted to get my thoughts of this jacket down.

Cheers!

Ok, so here are the pics of the Cavalry Twill jacket.

Like I said previously, the sleeves need to be taken up an inch but other than that it's a keeper for me. It could make a nice mid level layer in colder weather and it's not too ill fitting that some minor alterations couldn't fix.

Cheers!

Well, now that we've had a little cooler weather I took this one out today. Went well with my Adam fedora for a nice 50's look.

Cheers!

I'd never heard of the company before today. I looked it up and LOVED the items there. I will be making some purchases, wife willing :) I'm hoping she likes some of the items as she could rock the look.

Welcome to the Speakeasy Kory! Can't wait to see what you purchase from them. I have a couple of their coats, and one that really needs to be fitted. Other than that it is well built and meant to last. For the women the 1947 dress is a classy look for sure. Wait on the sales and you can usually pick one up for around $58 for her. Again, welcome and enjoy the Speakeasy.

(Can somebody get these folks an Avatar?)

Cheers!

Very cool! And I'm liking the hat Kory, well done.
Have you purchased any J. Peterman items recently (wife willing)?

Cheers!
