1000 Year old Viking Burial in Scotland.

Did humans evolve from an ape-like ancestor? What are the secrets of ancient Egypt? From Atlantis to modern day archeological digs, the discussion is here.

1000 Year old Viking Burial in Scotland.

A one thousand year old Viking chieftain's grave complete with funerary boat has been excavated on Scotland's Ardnamurchan peninsula. The grave contained the remains of everything the deceased would need in the next world from a drinking vessel to tools to weapons.

The remains of the boat that the grave contains is thought to have been about sixteen feet long and is represented in part by about 200 iron rivets that once held the planking together. Some archaeologists theorize that the boat was too small to brave the North Sea so it may have been either a small utility boat or one purpose built for the grave. In my humble opinion, setting out on the North Sea in a sixteen foot boat would not be the boldest thing that I've read of the Vikings doing.

Very cool indeed. Can't wait to see more photos of the find in the future. Hope this one makes it on either the History Channel or National Geographic Channel.

His wife probably killed him because he refused to stop for directions. That's how he ended up in SCotland to begin with, or end with as it appears!

I think a pushy wife was their version of a GPS. They are always dependably telling you where to go, how to get there, and are always happy to point out any wrong turns you make. :D

Pushy wife ???

One of my ancestors Attila The Hun had a pushy wife that's for sure...

Why many is the day you could hear her shrill voice echoing throughout the woods and across the Rhine and Danube "HON what are you doing ??"Image

Now I know why Attila was unstoppable. I'd fight wild animals, Celts, and the Roman army just to keep away from her myself.

We should be ashamed of ourselves, this was a really interesting thread.....

I now return control of this thread back to the people who are interested in Viking information and Archeology with my apologies......

You are quite correct SOG. I am hanging my head in shame. This was my own thread and I assisted, nay, I facilitated the hijacking of it. I am slime, I will never, ever.......er, who am I kidding?

I don't care if folks hijack my threads as long as what they post is more funny and entertaining than prime time television. Face it, I'm setting the bar pretty low there. :D

When you hijack your own thread, you are officially a hijackeraholic.

I did enjoy the original post, too. I have been to the museum in Dublin as well, with its many Viking artifacts. Dublin (and Cork and Limerick and Waterford) were all Viking cities originally. Hopefully I can make it to Scotland some day and see their Viking exhibits as well.

If you are interested in the ships used by the Vikings one of the best places to look into them is the Ship Museum in Copenhagen. Not only will you be able to see the remains of excavated ships but you can also see full scale functioning replicas of those excavated vessels. The replicas actually visit many of the World's ports as part of an ongoing education programs.

The museum is actually located about twenty four miles west of the city so if you go don't take a taxi it will get pricey.
